Leave the leaves

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. Actually…all of the seasons are my favorite or maybe I should say there are attributes of each season with which I fall in love. Fall has a special place in my heart. Despite the shortened days, the sunlight seen throughout fall has a special golden hue only matched by the most magical of sunsets. The air is crisp and developing an edge which lets us know warmer clothing is necessary. The wind blows with more ferocity than it does at other times of the year, except during a howling snowstorm in winter. The air has a smell about it that is difficult to describe and the colors, the colors are amazing. Reds, yellows and oranges that do bot rival anything in nature’s palette.

As much as I don’t like to see the trees shed their leaves I enjoy seeing them carpet my lawn. I run early in the morning, my route illuminated by only the beam of my headlamp, my eyes search for piles of leaves. Instinctively I head in that direction just to hear the crunch beneath my running shoes.

In my past life…the one where OCD ruled my day, I raked and raked and raked leaves. If I raked the lawn and later looked outside to see more leaves had fallen, it was my duty to get out there to rake and rake again. Now I simply don’t care. I prefer to look at nature’s palette and see the beauty bestowed upon me.

I love the look as the leaves carpet my lawn. I love the sound as they crunch beneath my feet. I love the smell as they begin to rot after a rain. I love the leaves.

Sure, I’ll rake the lawn but it won’t happen anytime soon.
