The 5 AM run

I love the 5 AM run. Running in the morning makes my day so much more enjoyable. It sets a great tone for the rest of the day. It’s also a great accomplishment to know I have my workout in for the day.
Despite the fact that I work as a social worker and complete about thirty therapy sessions each week, I’m not much of a people person. It’s not that I don’t enjoy people and their company, it’s just that I don’t need to be around a lot of people to be happy. Frankly I don’t need to be around people to be happy I don’t like the drama that goes with many relationships. I say what I have to say and prefer to save my energy for more important things as opposed to arguing over how much of a bill I owe when I’ve been to lunch with three other people.
The morning run allows me the solitude I seek. The morning run allows me to escape the majority of the drama which happens when the day begins for everyone else. I can run in relative peace. 
I have returned to running three weeks ago and it has been blissful, pain-free running. I have been hesitant and reluctant to hit the treadmill as soon as I walk through the front door of the gym. I hit the elliptical instead and warm up the muscles before heading to the treadmill. Tuesday I hit the treadmill first thing. I walked for a brief period of time before stopping and resetting the timer. I took those first tentative steps which remained pain free. My mind struggled to let go of the possibility of aggravating the injury. I’m sure muscle tightness had something to do with those thoughts. Since there was no pain I continued to run and as the muscles warmed up the tightness went away. I completed 3.1 miles and was surprised at how good I felt. I returned to the gym this morning and decided to head straight for the treadmill. I completed my customary “brief walk” before resetting the timer. I started to run and felt good from the beginning. I’m sure it didn’t hurt that the guy running next to me was running an 8mph pace. I completed four miles and was happy with my effort and the results so soon after an injury.
